Marzena’s story

I came to UK in 2001; I couldn’t say a word in English. I was qualified librarian in Poland, but I’ve started here from cleaning and doing very simple jobs. After 6 months of working very hard, I’ve decided to stay in UK for longer period, but I’ve also decided to learn English. My first steps took me to Shirley Library in Southampton. I have borrowed books, I’ve translated each word, page by page, it did not make any sense but I’ve carried on. Then I’ve borrowed audio books and listened to them over and over. After another year I’ve got a job in Pre School. I’ve started college and kept reading and going to library every week. Now I am happy in my NHS librarian job, working towards Chartership. One thing did not change – I still go to the public library almost every week… with my two boys. They love the children’s library and try to say to them – this Saturday we can’t go:)
