Lochwinnoch Library, Renfrewshire

Campaigners at Lochwinnoch Library in Renfrewshire put this video together to highlight the fact that their library was under threat. It’s been “a library for nearly 60 (years), but it took the council less than ten minutes to take its decision to close it. ”

Author Alasdair Gray, speaking at an event at Lochwinnoch Library, said “It’s abolishing a service that makes the place worth living in.”

They are also running a campaign on Facebook to keep their library in the library. (link no longer available)

The Lochwinnoch campaign is an excellent one, with a twist; Renfrewshire council don’t want to explicitly close the library (now, anyway), but want to move it to a much smaller space, for financial reasons that – literally – don’t add up.

It’s also complicated by a few local residents, through using the (in)famous village website forum, trying to undermine the “Keep the library in the library” campaign for their own long-term business gain. It’s an important reminder that not every resident is behind every local library campaign, some being against, sometimes for rather unpleasant reasons.
